The pub is well and truly dilapidated when Martin's 70th birthday can pass unremarked. So I thought I'd mark it with an interesting (IMHO) post connected to the Guv's past.
For some time, I've had an MPEG4 file on my computer labeled "Martin Newell's Oddcaste 19". I revisited it to find out what was so special that I was compelled to download it.
Well, let's begin with the Mixcloud page that contains the Oddcaste library, currently consisting of 153 shows. Interestingly, the latest show is number 154! This implies that there is a single show that is absent from Mixcloud. Any guesses which one? Of course - it's Oddcaste 19.
This orphan program begins with the Guv's delightful version of "They're Coming To Take Me Away Ha Ha", rewritten from a Wivenhoe perspective. Maybe I'll transcribe it if there's any interest.
Five commercially released tracks follow before we come to the other surprises. First is a "brand new" track called Dandy Lion. This was available on the 2018 "Pouring Salt On The Roof" bandcamp compilation (benefitting a culture center in Vilnius). It also showed up as Dandelion Falling on the "Life In A Time Machine" album.
The program closes with a version of "The Green-Gold Girl of the Summer" for voice and guitar. But in this case, the voice belongs to nine-year-old Lily Lockwell (aka Martin's daughter)! Grown-up Lily resurfaces on Oddcaste 108 singing "Say You'll Think About It", but this youthful exercise is quite special and touching.
So what's the deal with Oddcaste-off 19? Maybe Martin has suppressed it in deference to Lily's wishes or the tape got lost somewhere. If it's the latter case, just say the word and I'll send my copy along, Guv.
Anyway, wishing you a Happy Birthday and many more!
