Because my new car lacks a CD player, I've been searching for a mobile music source that's superior to satellite radio. This has led me to finally enroll in Spotify, which has spread immeasurable riches before me. Of course one of my first searches was for the Guv. Leaving aside the songs for the moment, I clicked on the podcast search and found nine examples involving Martin Newell. One was titled "When Not To Obey The Rulers And Authorities". Well, I thought, this is the consummate Guv attitude - let's give it a spin. Imagine my surprise when I found myself listening to Catholic priest Father Martin Newell from Walthamstow, whose main activity seems to be getting arrested for protesting the arms trade and climate change. Put these guys on stage together - The Martin Two-ell Show?
As a bonus, there is a brief podcast featuring Grounded Kiwis spokesperson Martin Newell, celebrating a decision to allow expatriate New Zealanders to return home without onerous COVID quarantines. Grounded Kiwis is a good name for a band.
Further casual exploration revealed #MartinNewell on Twitter, where there are far too many MNs to list. But in addition to the Kiwi and the Catholic, Twitter carried the news of the recent passing of the Very Reverend Canon Martin Newell from Curracuggeen, Headford Co Galway. Pre-deceased by (among many others) his nephew Martin! Very spiritual name it seems.
Enough of that - I would just like to say how promising my first impression of Spotify is. They even have the Brotherhood of Lizards - 454 monthly listeners!

I'll throw in a plug for Mixcloud, the site which hosts the guv's ongoing Oddcaste series as well as my own humble monthly new-music discovery show.

I wish I could forget H. Newell Martin, who pollutes every eBay search with his anatomy book! His biography is interesting - he moved from Britain to Baltimore as one of the first full professors at Johns Hopkins University; he married Hetty Cary, a celebrated beauty and general's widow who was the Betsy Ross of the Confederacy; he was a defender of vivisection; and his "career was curtailed by alcoholism".
Bonus - eBay currently offers an 1896 letter from assistant Illinois attorney general...wait for it...Martin L. Newell. Lovely bold signature.
Actual relevant bonus - an eBay seller in Reykjavik offers a photo from the Eastern Counties Newspaper library in Norwich of the well-attired Guv reclining on a couch and fondling a large black and white dog. Act now!

Speaking of “Lovely bold signatures”, have any of you have anything autographed by the Guv? His signature is rather impressive, like something out of a Dickens character.

No, only his name handwritten on the cardstock mailers of CDs sent by airmail. I’ve met him once at a Golden Arvo, and I suppose I was content to let that experience supersede the need for an autograph. Really, I’m too shy to ask.

I've never had the pleasure of meeting Martin, but we've had a delightful if sporadic correspondence over the years. In addition, Chespo now makes three Yank correspondents of mine who have visited Martin in Wivenhoe. Not counting long-ago pub denizen Jim Hollis. I can't remember whether he made the pilgrimage. Ah, the nostalgia!
Regarding autographs, besides the cardboard CD mailer experience, my Gypp EP bears the Guv's signature (but no one else's). I didn't seek that out, the record just came that way. I used to be hot on the trail of the first (pre-Martin) Gypp cassette, "Guild of Watchers", but that trail has gone cold. Even Ian Peppercorn couldn't help me, although he's turned up an 8-track with allegedly disappointing sound. A German podcaster has it, but he never answered me, der Scheisskopf! Only Tony Phillips can save me now.
Completely unrelated: Some admirable rebel has posted the XTC documentary "This Is Pop" on YouTube. As it is a Showtime property, I can imagine the film could be removed at any time. Act now! (It's terrific, especially the Rick Wakeman appearance) Now if only I could find the Dolly Mixture documentary...

Martin did autograph several of his books for me. I also bought one of his books that he autographed for someone else.
Also, Mr. ‘Ollis did make the pilgrimage to see Martin. He even sent me a short DVD of Martin playing for him.
As for that XTC documentary, I found it and burnt it on DVD, along w/a 1979 French TV appearance & a 1980 Dutch festival appearance.

So what's the contents of the DVD, Joe? This must be from more than a few years back. Incidentally, there another fellow from Salem on the Steve Hoffman forum. Goes by AnalogJ but he's actor/musician Jeff Bellin and he's really into Steely Dan. Also quite the audiophile who likes to create threads on technical topics that nobody answers . Perhaps your paths have crossed.

Aging Pierogy, that DVD has Martin doing “Ghost Parade” for Mr. ‘Ollis when he visited the Guv back in May 2007.
I know about that Jeff guy. I don’t know him at all, but I think that our paths have probably crossed at the Record Exchange here in the Witch City.
