I hadn't realized what a hotbed of spoken word artistry Essex has become. I would designate Martin the eminence grise of the the scene, except John Cooper Clarke has lived in Colchester for decades. That would make the Guv the young upstart, except for the rise of Stanford-le-Hope's Scroobius Pip. The talented Mr. Pip blazed through the hip-hop firmament but has in recent years become a prolific podcaster. And who was his guest in 2018 but John Cooper Clarke! You can skip the first ten minutes of preamble but JCC tells marvelous stories (as you would expect) and reveals his love of the Ramones and Willie Nelson. I also learned here that actor Michael Madsen is a poet of no small renown. (If Martin reads this, I would ask that he gently inform JCC that the Star Spangled Banner was written in Baltimore, not New Orleans as Dr Clarke states.) Scroobius Pip 2018 podcasts
Here's Scroobius in action. Four million views. "You see a mousetrap, I see free cheese and a fucking challenge." I was hooked!
