Let's begin with Martin's great advocate Aug Stone and his podcast Etcetera ETC. Aug recently interviewed Rachel Love (formerly Rachel Bor) of Dolly Mixture fame, who was promoting her first solo album 'Picture In Mind'. In the interview, she credited the Guv with giving her the push to release it. The leadoff track is 'Primrose Hill', and I thought "Hang on, doesn't Martin have a song by that name?". Deep in my archives is an unreleased live recording of 'The House On Primrose Hill', one of Martin's jazz ballads sung by Colchester's Jeanette Lynes with the Guv on piano.
OK, an ultra-obscure coincidence - so what? Well, searching the terms "Primrose Hill" and "Martin Newell" leads one to the 2007 French film "Primrose Hill" directed by Mikhael Hers. Now for the payoff - the soundtrack includes something called "On The Lightship Way" written and performed by Martin Newell! This song is totally unknown to me. I imagine it's about the red lightship docked in Colchester. I don't know where I can find the French film.
Can anyone shed any, um, light on this? I would enjoy the backstory of how this came to be as much as hearing the song.
Here's Rachel with the Hill that started all this-

Hi, Pierogy, erm, Aging Ted. I can't help you re: the background, but it is a lovely song. I also enjoyed Martin's latest Oddcaste showcasing Rachel's new album.

These are not the same songs. And not related.I have been in touch with Rachel recently and my manager Johnny has been, 'caretaking' her new projects in recent months because we both felt that a talent of this charm should not go unheard. Lightship Way is an actual street in Colchester. It was written and recorded sometimes in 2006 for the French production of a film, also called Primrose Hill, The song does not feature prominently -- it can only be heard playing faintly on a radio during a prolonged sex scene. I did see the film. I don't know what happened to it.

Holy Cow! The pub had gotten a bit lonesome with just me and Joe, so it's a real treat to have Mr Mule drop by! I just knew the on-her-backstory of the Lightship Way song would be cool. Surely one of the least-known items in the catalogue. Any reason it couldn't go up on Bandcamp for a proper appreciation? Easier than explaining to the missus why I'm obsessing over French film sex... Another revelation from Aug's interview was that Rachel and her late husband Steve also recorded as 'Purple Pudding Clause' and 'Spelt'. That Aug certainly knows the most interesting people. On an unrelated note, I'd like to take this chance to inform Martin that I've had a spot of trouble with the Jangling Man Kickstarter reward scheme. Watching the film was a great pleasure, but I backed at a level that included unspecified bonus footage. To date, I haven't heard anything about where to view this, and my question on the Kickstarter site has received no response. Perhaps a nudge from the Guv to the right person could shake this loose for me (and others). The Colchester Lightship --

Good news/bad news situation - No sooner did I gently complain here about the absence of Kickstarter bonus footage than I received a link to said footage! So I give Martin full credit for lighting a fire under Sharp Film's ass. The 'exclusive', password-protected clip was Jean Genie live in 1990. Wonderful stuff. If only it hadn't been freely available since summer 2020 as the sole(!) offering on the Guv's YouTube channel. Oh well, I was advised to stay tuned for further bonus video so let's hope they ratchet up the exclusivity factor.

I recall that a demo of "On Lightship Way" (among other tracks) was available ever so briefly on Martin's website in 2007.

Well done Robin! Confirmed by Wayback Machine! Of course the archived link is dead. If anyone was alert enough to grab this, I'd be interested. There used to be all sorts of esoteric downloads at the old site. I got the Black Shuck/Wildman of Wivenhoe soundtrack tape that way.
Welcome to 2007 Download a free new track Lightship way (demo) WMA.

The title's somehow so familiar that I assumed I had the track sitting in my library, and was very surprised to find that I don't. I thought I'd downloaded just about everything that was made available at the old site, but most likely I hadn't even discovered the pub yet in 2007.
