We are approaching the first anniversary of the death of Dr. Tim Smith, mastermind of the unique UK band Cardiacs. There are some intersections with the Cleaners-verse; for instance the top post on Cardiacs Facebook public group is currently by superfan Graham Bendel, whom some of us may remember as the director of Upstairs Planet. In fact, the main purpose of the post is to recommend Martin to Cardiacs fans... Bendel recommends Newell
Captain Sensible has praised Cardiacs, and Andy Partridge actually appears on their tribute album. Cardiacs are often compared to Frank Zappa, which is not totally off-base. While Frank was a Composer, Tim was first and foremost a songwriter even if he adopted Zappa-esque rhythmic and harmonic vocabularies. This online magazine quote sums it up better than I could: "the equally revered and reviled cult band who would spend the next three decades attracting both critical hostility and a following that expressed its love with a near-devotional fervour at packed, celebratory gigs." Cardiacs only ever recorded one cover, for the Kinks alt-rock tribute album 'Shangri-La' in 1989. Appropriate insofar as the only constant band members were Tim and his brother Jim. So this goes out to Diskojoe:
