I'm in the middle of an exciting project involving the Cleaners' JarMusic CD bonus tracks. It led me to this astonishing website wherein some very determined German has posted literally thousands of examples from the Cassette Culture heyday of the 80s and 90s.
tapeattack.blogspot.com
Just two months ago, he posted Joachim Reinbold's "Berlincassette 3/90". Discogs lists 24 different Berlincassettes but not this one. The final song on 3/90 is listed as "The One and Only" by "Cleaners From Venus".
Imagine my state of mind when I contemplated this unknown cassette with this unknown Cleaners song! Well, after downloading 3/90, I found that it was all just a sly marketing stunt by Joachim. The inlay card had this announcement - "BONUSTRACK: the one and only CLEANERS FROM VENUS from their new cassette NUMBER THIRTEEN" It turned out to be the opening section of "Here She Crashes". Ironic since my hopes were simultaneously crashing.
So if anyone ventures into tapeattack, don't fall for this trick like I did. But do venture - you can hear the 'Color' mixes of various Cleaners tracks that purport to be unique. They showed up as JarMusic CD bonuses. And you can download Joachim's fabulous 91 page Cleaners document portfolio, containing all manner of lyrics, pictures, history and correspondence. A must-have.
P.S. Has anyone ever worked out the backwards singing on "Here She Crashes"?

P.S. Has anyone ever worked out the backwards singing on "Here She Crashes"? Some of the lyrics are missing at ends of verses; it sounds like the guv simply needed those backward bits to appear/disappear at precise moments and it didn't matter if that resulted in the lyrics being truncated. But, roughly: [unknown] bliss when day begun Hit by the archer of the sun Came to rest by a churchyard wall Slept [in wait] (Since the lyric is lopped off here, the words might have been something else like "Slept and waited … for night to fall"?) Twilight rose of a brown silk sheen Washed her face in the village stream Saucer-eyed in a moonlit lane (If there was a fourth line here, there's no trace of it in the recording) Now she wanders an ice-blue field With her shadow the only shield Follows the line on the blackthorn hedge Til she reaches the wat (One might guess the line's original ending was "the water’s edge") And the song's chorus appears as well. So, a tale of a woman sleeping rough, meandering or perhaps even on a journey? But she sounds utterly alone, either oblivious to/disengaged from society or deliberately trying to move beneath the radar.

Well that's a resounding 'yes' to my question! Thanks so much for the reveal. Sheds a whole new light on the song. I wonder whether Martin ever published that poem.
And if anybody is hesitant to dive into the Young Southpaw podcast interview with the Guv, there's a song from his forthcoming album at the very end - "Sixpenny Novelette". I was surprised to find Martin is lukewarm about the Kinks, but crazy about Slade (who were barely on my high school radar). I recall he was a big fan of the band Stray (whom I really should check out).

How oh how I wish I'd have been more proactive when it came to those Jarmusic CD-Rs, and ripped and transferred the tracks when I had the chance. Coasters in jewel cases now, the lot of 'em.
