Plenty of action over on Facebook what with the Kickstarter campaign and the July EP and the link to Toby Roberts' Life of Rhyme. Trouble is, Toby's Vimeo page contains only a 2:23 excerpt from the film. Can anyone twist his arm to release the whole thing? In the meantime, Gypp alumni Ian Peppercorn and Brian Rudd (along with Dave Hoser) offer this new extravaganza, a 32 minute collection of music videos from Trash Humanica: Inside The White Arcade

Speaking of twisting arms, when I read that our webmaster put Martin's TV appearances on DVD, for him, wish I could do the same to either gentleman to share them w/us

Yes - Eye Tunes, Reel 2! The Kickstarter project had better get a move on or we won't get any of that video. But here comes Lily to promise us a Golden Afternoon film next year! 'The Wicked Witch' is in fact on Michael Cumming's own YouTube channel which features a further six clips from the show.
And farewell to martinnewell.co.uk. It directs to a 'borrow short term cash' site now. I remember when it was the portal to a much rowdier pub. Serge Zeni would hold us all spellbound with his esoteric rantings and we would argue over the propriety of Sophie Titwank. I could impersonate Paul McCartney and draw Martin's ire. There was a ton of interesting trivia there - I never thought to preserve it because I thought the internet was permanent. Where else could you learn the source of the Mr Schmootie Patootie theme?

Ted, if you go to the Internet Wayback Machine, they have stuff going back to 2000 on the old pub & some of the old threads actually work if you want to relive the days of yore

While most of the action has long since moved to Farcebook, it's still good to pop into the Pub from time to time. The Jangling Man doc Kickstarter pledges are just past the halfway mark as of this morning, with 13 days to go. Promises to be the second biggest nailbiter of the season.

A real nail-biter! I backed the Kickstarter film at the 'bonus footage' level naturally. Not for me the tote bags and clothing and LPs.
Am I dreaming or did the Guv once consider crowdfunding the Greatest Living Englishman book but backed out after a crisis of conscience? Well this demonstrates he has the crowd behind him!

Am I dreaming or did the Guv once consider crowdfunding the Greatest Living Englishman book but backed out after a crisis of conscience? Well this demonstrates he has the crowd behind him! I could be wrong, but when he backed out of the book project my impression was that it was due to a distaste for the notion of crowdfunding and the power dynamic that comes from it. More like "I'll create on my own terms, regardless of whether anyone's waiting for it, and if they come around to it, great. But I'm not going to create to fulfill a market need, and then have to feel beholden to pleasing hundreds of strangers."

You guys are both right about Martin using but abandoning crowdfunding on the GLE book. I think the difference w/this documentary is that it's the director who did the crowdfunding, not Martin.

So today is fee-free Friday at Bandcamp and I'm poking around for inspiration and what should pop up but an extensive catalog by our old pub friend Serge Zeni about whom I recently wrote! I direct you to his 'Tribute To Martin Newell' which consists of five variations on two songs. The lead track is 'Napoleon Solo Looks at You!' which is pretty darn clever. The delightful thing to report is that these tracks kick ass. If you can get past the mostly dreadful vocals on 'Ilya Kuryakin...', there is some magnificent instrumental work going on. The eleven-minute 'Mercury Girl' is breathtaking. It shows Martin's songs can shine in a heavier setting. Merci, Serge! Bon Travail! Serge Zeni plays Martin Newell

Guess they're taking the lockdown seriously at the Karma Scene. Rather than let two months go by with no activity, here's an early '80s photo of Martin when he was a member of the Nu Kats: OK, Martin was never in the Nu Kats. That uncanny doppelganger is one Freddy Moore, who gave his name to his teenage bride Demi. Yes, that Demi Moore. Incidentally, the Nu Kats had a song called I Was A Teenage Shoplifter (vs Idiot Dancer). Demi Newell has a nice ring to it, though...

Hope all's well w/you Aging Ted & anyone else visiting here @ this dusty old pub. Everything's been OK these past few months, trying to avoid stupid reality by various means. I just picked up a new book about Chris Bell & Big Star called There Was A Light. I'm also supposed to get the new book about Ready Steady Go! that I ordered back in September any day now. I also got a new copy of the Late District since my original CD-R copy went flooey on me. For old time's sake, here's a piccy of Franny @ the set of Grand Prix

Was it your Kool Kat CD that failed, Joe? You made me dig up my copy and what do you know, it's acting weird. I never liked that CD because it chopped the songs up so I got the Burger cassette and it promptly broke, so The Late District is a bit of a problem child for me. Martin recently posted on Facebook that he found the (very funny) fake film reviews that were tied to each Late District song on some abandoned hard drive. He could have asked me for them. They came with the original direct-from-Martin download version, so of course I didn't get them from Kool Kat so I wrote to Martin and he kindly sent them along. Now I'd better check my other Kool Kat CD-Rs. I have a couple of the old JarMusic Cleaners CD-Rs with very scarce bonus tracks that are tragically unplayable now. It's always something. Here's the lass from track 8

Yes, Ted, it was a Kool Kat CD. My current KK version of English Electric still plays OK, but my copy of In Chimp World had to have the play button twice before it can play. I'll probably have to get both when In Chimp World gets reissued.

There's a plug on Martin's Facebook for the XTCLimelight holiday podcast. I can recommend part one so far - there's a fine interview with the Guv about the new EP and lots of spirited interaction between on-air guests Andy Partridge and The Waitresses' Chris Butler. They spontaneously bond over their shared enthusiasm for Henry Darger, which I certainly didn't expect going into the podcast. Interesting background info regarding the making of 'Christmas In Suburbia' and 'Christmas Wrapping' (which Andy simply adores). I'm looking forward to part two.
