Another nicely written story, David. Is "Jitty" a UK wide term for an alley, or is it a regional term?

Another nicely written story, David. Is "Jitty" a UK wide term for an alley, or is it a regional term? Thank you! Jitty is strongly regional. Not far away from Belper, where I grew up and where the above photo was taken, people start to say "jetty". I now live in East Yorkshire, where people call them snickets, although exclusively in Hull and the surrounding area, the wider version that you can drive a car up is known as a tenfoot, because...well, you see.

My jitty photographs have also appeared in Northern Soul's Ginnelwatch feature.

David, what is a "wet ginnell"? Those are the editor's words, not mine! Firstly, I'd call it a jitty (but ginnel, snicket, shut etc. - it's all the same) and secondly it's only wet because it had been raining!

I'm being interviewed on BBC Radio Derby tomorrow morning, about ginnels in general and my short story Jitty in particular.
The feature should begin at around 08:40 and will begin with Helen Nugent, editor of Northern Soul magazine, to whose GinnelWatch feature I have also contributed - see above.

I finally got to listen to you this AM being interviewed. You sounded good. I just can't imagine any morning show here in the States that would spend time talking about alleys, perhaps because they have a negative connotation here.

I'm sure there are passageways with certain reputations, in most areas. We're just celebrating the nice, clean and inviting community resources. Not the ones full of human and other detritus!
