Just stopping by to do some dusting at the pub before the Guv's birthday... Perhaps some of you know the story of Bowie wanting Norman Rockwell to paint his portrait for the 'Young Americans' album cover but couldn't wait the six months Rockwell would require to complete it. Bowie then saw a photo of his choreographer, Toni Basil, on the cover of After Dark magazine and hired the same photographer to shoot the cover in the same style. "That's all well and good, but where's the naked girl?" you ask. So Ms Basil recorded her debut single Breakaway in 1966. It's a terrific song and performance on its own, but then experimental filmmaker Bruce Conner made a video to accompany it. Not of Toni singing, but rather dancing (her specialty). Being experimental, there's a lot of rapid cutting and no costume continuity except that she eventually bares all for the sake of art, if you catch my meaning. Conner's estate is pretty vigilant about keeping this off YouTube, but for the time being it can be experienced on Twitter. View it while you can - Toni is simply incandescent. Not easily forgotten. Nice to hear from you, Ted. That video was pretty interesting. There were a lot of music videos in the pre- MTV era that were artistic, like this one. You don't see that much nudity in this video compared w/stuff you see today. Continuing w/the theme of there's more to Toni Basil than "Mickey", here's a clip of her version of "Swan Lake" that was originally done on SNL in 1978. This version dates from 1988 from one of the periodic revivals of the Smothers Brothers Show. Everyone is fully dressed: m.youtube.com/watch?v=3_zclmI8Xq8

That clip was new to me. Too bad Toni wasn't in the ensemble. We make a good team, Joe, you just set me up for another post - speaking of Saturday Night Live and continuing our David B theme, the most recent show had David Byrne as musical guest. He performed 'Toe Jam' which was originally on a 2009 Fatboy Slim album. The video for this is simply a masterpiece, no actual nudity but very very naughty, like Benny Hill on steroids. The choreography makes the black censor bars into their own character. Yes I know South Park made a parody of it but I prefer the real girls, what can I say?
